Shift is a new decentralized general-purpose web3.0 website. Shift uses a proof-of-stake type blockchain based on the interstellar file storage system. The transaction speed of the website is fast, and decentralized applications have begun to be launched.
Shift proposes a solution to the censorship problem and explains how a combination of these new technologies can solve the problem. Information censorship and suppression has always been a common problem in human society. The advent of blockchain and other distributed technologies has created a technological revolution that can ensure that any content cannot be easily censored. The combination of storage layer and presentation layer technologies enables end users and operators the ability to preserve data without censorship.
Phantom is a unified technology suite as a platform for hosting content in distributed systems.
To solve the centralization and censorship problems of the network, it is necessary to have a system or software layer that can remove or reduce single points of failure. There are all kinds of failure nodes on the network – server hosts, DNS (Domain Name Service) providers, and WAN (Wide Area Network) connectivity to the Internet. Unfortunately, troubleshooting WAN connectivity is beyond the scope of this document, but server hosting and DNS issues can be alleviated by using a software suite developed by Shift called Phantom. Phantom is a layered application that provides a technology stack for building distribution.
Phantom provides solutions for many website review sources. As the name suggests, services hosted on the Phantom can disappear from one host, but remain accessible from another host on the network. Phantom creates the storage layer for the Shift network by complementing the IPFS backbone. End users are able to submit files for long-term storage using a blockchain-based space leasing system. Website operators can use Hydra to render resources to a Shift storage cluster serving their entire website, and use Jenga to keep content alive, which dynamically updates discovered resources if the content is censored. This technology suite creates a seamless end-user experience that cannot be easily censored.
Shift is an accessible open source blockchain application platform. Developers can create their own decentralized applications (dApps) with simple setup. Each dApp has its own sidechain independent of the Shift main chain, but the sidechain can still be connected to and synchronized with the main chain. This enables unlimited scalability without jeopardizing the stability of the main chain.
Shift's blockchain technology is written in JavaScript, encouraging mass adoption because coders are already familiar with the programming language. Each dApp has access to Shift's own IPFS cluster, using the promising peer-to-peer hypermedia distribution protocol InterPlanetary filesystem to store data. The existence of Shift tokens - defined as utility coins - allows each dApp owner to implement an intrinsic monetization model or exchange platform for digital assets in their dApp.
Shift uses the delegated Proof-of-Stake (dPOS) consensus algorithm, and its network consists of master nodes and delegate nodes. Allows delegated nodes to make changes in a blockchain (i.e., a distributed and decentralized ledger). 101 out of an unlimited number of representative nodes are selected to participate in proxy rounds based on obtaining approval votes from the community to become block producers. Each token holder can vote on up to 101 favorite delegates and/or become a delegate themselves. Voting is proportional to the token holder's account balance. Each delegate round, the 101 delegates with the highest approval rate (i.e. backed by the largest number of Shift tokens) are selected to generate blocks for the delegate round. Block producers receive block rewards in the form of new tokens issued by the ShiftNRG software.
Application scenario
Phantom
Shift's first official DAPP is called Phantom, a user interface for file management on the IPF network on a Shift cluster. Data can be pinned on the cluster for permanent storage based on a token service model. Phantom also includes a wizard that enables decentralized web hosting and enables management of the actual top-level domain.
Sidechain
Phantom will soon have its own chain, bundled with Shift's main chain as a sidechain. Phantom Sideechain will have its own rules and transaction types, allowing infinite possibilities. This prototype is pre-beta and is already running on Shift’s testnet. This website is already powered by our storage nodes.
Service Mode
A cluster consists of a group of storage nodes (peers). Every token holder is able to join the cluster and can contribute disk space (storage capacity) to the Shift cluster. In 2018, Shift will propose a token service model that will make it economically beneficial to join the cluster. Shift tokens can also be used to request usage of a fraction of the available disk space provided by the cluster. Data can be published and pinned on the cluster. This means it will be permanently stored on the cluster - as long as the content publisher holds the token as proof of storage.
Free File Transfer
It is also possible to send files (for free) outside the cluster to all peers connected to the cluster but not part of it. However, these peers running the IPFS daemon may have a garbage collector that occasionally deletes stored files, thus creating a cache.
Shift is an accessible, open source blockchain application platform. One of the biggest threats to the web is the web itself. Businesses can unilaterally shut down data with their independent writers. Shift and Phantom allow avoiding this catastrophe: user content is stored in a decentralized manner, ensuring that authors always maintain access. This is Shift and Phantom's mission: to augment and replace classical hosting and DNS providers. Enter Shift: It provides a utility token that users can use within the ecosystem to secure storage on Phantom dApps or exchange services with others. Shift's Proof-of-Delegate consensus algorithm also allows users who participate in the voting process to reap the benefits, rewarding others for providing reliable nodes to the network.
