Voltaire: Scalability and guarantees. This release focuses on assurance and scalability by introducing a treasury, which will ensure the sustainability and self-sufficiency of the blockchain and community.
Basho: Performance improvements. The features of this release focus on performance, security, and scalability. It will perform Ouroboros Praos and modify the network layer.
2017 - the first quarter of 2020
Goguen, this stage mainly designs and implements the next-generation virtual machine IELE and the common language architecture as the core infrastructure of future blockchain technology. The proposed technology based on formal methods and the latest programming language theory will bring higher security and reliability to the blockchain system and reduce the risk of vulnerabilities.
The Shelley release will focus on ensuring key elements are in place to grow as a fully decentralized and autonomous system, expected to be released in Q2 2018. The main content of this stage of development includes: opening of the Uroboros delegation, multi-signature transition, middleware, consensus rewards and fees, deep secret room (anti-quantum signature), light-end customer support, humanized address, networking, and establishment in Hong Kong Co-working spaces, conferences for developers and companies in Tokyo, partnerships with Chinaccelerator and MOX, investments in blockchain companies, R&D bases in Vietnam.
Byron: Cardano is a third generation blockchain created from the ground up utilizing research, peer evaluation and a rigorous formalized development model. The story started in 2015 to solve three strategic challenges facing all blockchain networks: scalability, two years, thousands of GitHub commits, and dozens of hours of research, published in September 2017 The first version of Cardano, and the Byron period began.
The first version of Cardano allows users to buy and sell the ADA cryptocurrency — named after Switch-era programmer Ada Lovelace — on a federated network running the groundbreaking Ouroboros consensus protocol. At the heart of the Cardano network, Ouroboros is the first proof-of-stake protocol created on the basis of academic research, with a mathematically verified security level.
The Byron period also saw the birth of Daedalus Wallet (IOHK's official desktop wallet for ADA) and Yoroi Wallet (a light wallet designed for fast transactions and everyday use by IOHK's sister company Emurgo).
The launch of the Cardano SL mainnet marks the official launch of Cardano, with the Byron release establishing a baseline for Cardano and allowing users to trade and transfer Ada.
Emurgo was incorporated in Japan; the Ouroboros Praos certification documents, the Ouroboros blockchain protocol, the Kaleidoscope protocol, etc. were issued respectively.
The Cardano Foundation is registered in Switzerland.
IOHK is founded by Charles Hoskinson and Jeremy Wood.
